Photography Gift Certificates & Thoughtful Holiday Gift Ideas in Knoxville and Kingsport, TN
Every year around this time, I catch myself scrolling through what feels like a hundred open tabs, adding things to my cart and hoping something jumps out as meaningful. Most of the time I check out with something that’s fine. Nice, even. It shows up in two days in a cardboard box. But it’s not something anyone will still be holding onto years from now.
The gifts I treasure most are the ones that feel like someone really thought of me. And what’s more personal than giving someone the chance to capture a moment or a story in their life that they’ll keep for years to come?
If you’re searching for unique holiday gift ideas in Knoxville, Maryville, Kingsport or anywhere in East Tennessee, here are a few of my favorites, and how I can help make them happen for you and the people you love this season.
1. A Photography Gift Certificate for Someone You Love
This is the one I’m most excited about (of course ;). A photography gift certificate gives someone more than photos. It gives them time set aside to slow down with the people they love, and to walk away with images that tell their story.
A photo session gift certificate is perfect for:
New parents who never seem to be in the photos
A couple celebrating an anniversary, an engagement, or just a really good year
Grandparents who would love a session with the grandkids
A friend who’s been talking about getting photos “someday”
The pet lover whose dog is their whole world (yes, I photograph pets too!)
Gift certificates can go toward a family session, milestone photos, portraits, a couples session, and more. Reach out through my gift form and I’ll help you put one together that’s ready to give.
2. Book a Family Photo Session and Gift the Photos
Here’s the flip side, and it might be my favorite. Book a family photo session for your crew, then turn those photos into gifts for the people who love you most.
Grandparents, aunts and uncles, and the friends who feel like family will treasure a current photo of your family way more than another candle or gift card. And it works for so much more than Christmas: birthdays, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Valentine’s Day, or just because. One session can cover a whole year of thoughtful gifts.
If you want photos in hand before the holidays, my fall and holiday mini sessions in Knoxville and Kingsport are a great fit, with natural park settings in Knoxville and a field and barn setup on a private mini farm in Kingsport.
3. Printed Family Photos for Their Home
Digital galleries are wonderful, but photos really come to life when they’re printed and hung where you see them every day. Pick a few favorites from your session and have them printed for a loved one’s living room, hallway or bedside table.
I’m a big believer in printing your photos (not just letting them live on your phone forever..), and I’ve learned a lot about what makes a print worth hanging. If you’re curious, I shared what I found in Smallwoods vs. Walgreens: My Honest Take on Printing Oversized Family Photos. I’m always happy to help you choose which images will look best printed large and which ones shine in a smaller frame.
4. A Photo Book Gift to Remember a Special Occasion
Some stories deserve more than one photo. A photo book is a beautiful way to tell the whole thing: a first birthday, a fiftieth anniversary, a new baby coming home, or a year of growing up.
It’s the kind of gift that ends up on a coffee table and gets flipped through again and again. Grandparents especially love these, because they can pull it out and share it with anyone who stops by.
5. A Generations Session: The Best Gift for Grandparents
If there’s one gift that becomes more meaningful with every passing year, it’s this one. Grandparents, parents and kids all together in one place. These are the photos families come back to again and again, and the ones that grow more precious with time.
A generations session makes a beautiful gift for grandparents, or a beautiful gift from them to the whole family.
6. A Milestone Session
Turning 40? Retiring? Graduating? Expecting? Milestones are exactly the moments worth documenting. A milestone photo session marking a big chapter is a gift that says, “This matters, and you matter.”
7. Looking for Something Unconventional? Let’s Dream Up a Creative Photo Shoot
This is where I really light up. Before I ever picked up a camera for Hux & Mae, I spent nearly two decades as an art director and creative director, planning photo shoots from the first sketch to the final frame. Brainstorming fun photo shoot ideas is still one of my favorite things to do, and a creative session lets me bring that side of me to your story.
If the person you’re shopping for isn’t a “matching outfits in a field” kind of person, a custom concept session might be the perfect gift. A few ideas to get your wheels turning:
A day in the life at home. Saturday pancakes, pajamas, the messy kitchen and all. The real, everyday moments are the ones we miss most later.
The hobby session. Grandma teaching the kids her biscuit recipe, Dad and the boys fishing, a gardener among the tomato plants. Photos of the things people love to do say so much about who they are.
Recreate a family photo. Dig out an old photo from the ’80s or ’90s and recreate it with the same people, years later. Bonus points for the same couch.
A favorite local spot. The coffee shop where you had your first date, the diner you go to every Sunday, the trail you hike every fall in the Smokies. Places hold stories too.
The best friends session. No kids, no partners, just the friends who have been there through it all.
A pet’s big day. A birthday “party” or gotcha day celebration for the four-legged family member.
A storybook or themed session. Inspired by a favorite book, a season, or a little bit of make believe. Kids especially love this one.
Have an idea of your own, or just a feeling you want to capture? Tell me about it. I’d love to dream it up with you.
Why Hux & Mae Is the Thoughtful Choice This Season
I started Hux & Mae Photo because I believe the photos we treasure most are the ones that feel like us. Here’s what that means when you work with me:
It’s personal. Hux & Mae is a boutique photography business, and I keep a limited schedule so every session gets my full attention. Creative direction is built in. With years of art directing shoots behind me, I bring ideas, planning and a storyteller’s eye to every session, whether it’s a simple mini session or a fully custom concept.
The photos are made to last. I lean toward natural tones and airy, timeless images over trendy filters, so your photos will feel just as good in twenty years as they do today. It’s relaxed. I want you to feel like yourselves. Kids can be kids, and I’ve even been known to hand them my camera for a minute so they can try it out. I’ll help with the gift part too. From choosing the right photography gift certificate to picking which photos to print, I’m happy to walk you through it so the gift feels as thoughtful as you meant it to be.
I’m local. I’m a family photographer based in East Tennessee, serving Maryville, Knoxville and the Tri-Cities, including Kingsport and Johnson City.
