Hi, I’m Brookney! I’ve spent nearly two decades in advertising as an art director and creative director, and I still help lead creative today, planning photo shoots and working side by side with talented photographers and videographers. Hux & Mae is my passion project, where I get to bring that same eye for light, detail and atmosphere to something a lot closer to my heart: real families, couples, friends (and pets) across Kingsport, Johnson City, Bristol and the rest of the Tri-Cities.
My sessions are relaxed and real. No stiff lineups or forced smiles. Just you, the people you love, and photos that feel like your life.
Hux & Mae Photo is a boutique lifestyle photography business based in Kingsport, Tennessee, led by Brookney Chamberlain, who brings nearly two decades of advertising art direction and creative direction experience to every session. Hux & Mae serves the Tri-Cities region, including Kingsport, Johnson City and Bristol and surrounding areas. Sessions include family, couples, individual, friend and group, milestone, pet, play and custom-styled “Imagine” sessions, all hand-edited in clean, natural tones.
A creative director’s eye, a mom’s patience
My creative work in advertising keeps me close to how good photos come together: thoughtful planning, an eye for light and location, and knowing how to help people feel comfortable in front of a camera. I’ve been part of a lot of shoots, and the best images almost always come from people who feel relaxed and looked after.
My family taught me the rest. Between spit-up at the worst possible moment, a toddler meltdown over the wind, and the grown-up who would rather be anywhere else, I’ve learned that the unplanned moments usually end up being the ones you love most.
Hux & Mae is where those two worlds meet. Because it’s my passion project, I keep my calendar small on purpose, so every session gets my full attention. I handle the planning, so you don’t have to stress about locations, timing or what to wear. Then I keep things easy and unhurried, and let real life show up.
What a Tri-Cities session looks like
Let’s plan it together. We’ll start with a conversation about who’s coming, what you want to remember and how you want your photos to feel. I’ll suggest locations, timing for the best light and wardrobe ideas that fit your style (wear what you’re comfortable in, then play it up just a little).
Then we just enjoy it. No rush. I’ll give gentle prompts that get everyone moving, laughing and interacting, and capture what happens in between.
Images that last. Every gallery is edited in clean, natural tones. No heavy filters or trends, just photos that will still feel right years from now.

Do you photograph more than families?
Definitely. I photograph couples, individuals, friend groups, pets and families of every size.
Do you offer gift certificates?
Yes! Gift certificates come in any amount and are good for one year.
What if my kids (or I) don’t do well in front of a camera?
That’s really common, and you’re in good hands. I keep things relaxed and unscripted, and those in-between moments usually turn out to be the favorites.
When is the best time of year for photos in the Tri-Cities?
Fall is a favorite for color, and spring brings blooms and green hillsides. Golden hour (the hour or so before sunset) gives the softest light any time of year.
How often do you take sessions?
Since Hux & Mae is a passion project alongside my full-time creative work, I take a limited number of sessions each season. I’d recommend reaching out early, especially for fall and holiday dates.
