You typed it into your phone, and now you’re looking at a map full of pins, a dozen websites and a lot of pretty pictures. They all look nice, so how do you choose?

Finding a photographer close by is the easy part. Finding the right one for your family takes a little more thought. Here’s a simple guide to help you choose with confidence.

1. Look for a Style You’d Hang on Your Wall

Every photographer has a style. Some go bright and colorful, some go dark and moody, and some lean on heavy filters that are popular this year and may look dated in five.

Ask yourself: Will I still love these photos when my kids are grown? If the answer is yes, you’re getting close. Look through full galleries, not just the highlight reel, so you can see how a whole session looks from start to finish.

2. Pay Attention to How the People Look

Not the outfits or the backdrop, the people. Do they look relaxed? Are the kids laughing for real, or holding a forced smile? Do the photos feel like a family, or like a lineup?

The best family photos happen when everyone feels at ease. A good photographer knows how to make that happen, even for the dad who “hates pictures” and the toddler who skipped her nap.

3. Find Someone Who Knows Your Area

A local photographer knows where the light is best in October, which parks get crowded on Saturdays, and which hidden spots make a beautiful backdrop. Around East Tennessee, that might be an open farm field in Kingsport, a lakeside park in Knoxville, or a spot near downtown Johnson City or Bristol that already means something to your family.

Local knowledge makes for an easier session and better photos.

4. Ask the Right Questions Before You Book

A quick conversation tells you a lot. A few good questions to ask:

How long is the session, and how many photos will I get?

How do you help kids (and nervous grownups) feel comfortable?

Do you help pick a location?

What should we wear?

When will we get our gallery?

You want a photographer who makes the process feel easy and personal, not like a checklist.

5. Trust How It Feels

At the end of the day, you’re inviting someone into a meaningful moment for your family. Choose someone you’d actually enjoy spending an hour with. That comfort shows up in the photos.

Looking for a Family Photographer in East Tennessee?

I’m Brookney, the photographer behind Hux & Mae Photo, named after my two kids, Hux and Mae. I photograph families across Kingsport, Johnson City, Bristol, Knoxville and the surrounding East Tennessee area.

Before picking up the camera myself, I spent nearly two decades art directing photo shoots in advertising. That background shapes how I work now: I know how to find good light, keep a session relaxed, and catch the real moments that make a photo feel like your family.

Here’s what you can expect with me:

  • A relaxed, easygoing session. I travel light, so it feels more like a family outing than a photo shoot.
  • Natural, timeless images. Soft, airy tones that will look just as good on your wall years from now.
  • Kids who get to be kids. I often hand the little ones my camera for a few frames. It builds trust, sparks a little creativity, and usually gets the best giggles of the day.
  • Help with the details. Location ideas, wardrobe tips (wear what you’re comfortable in, then play it up a little) and anything else you’re wondering about.
  • Room for everyone. Families, couples, friends, milestones and the family dog are all welcome.

Hux & Mae is my passion project, so I keep my calendar small and give each family my full attention.
