Blue Hour Maternity Session in Kingsport, TN: A Family Built on Faith

Some families pray their way to each other. This sweet family is one of them.

Their road to growing their family wasn’t a straight line. There were ups and downs, seasons of waiting, and a whole lot of earnest prayer. Through all of it, they held tight to their faith. Now they’re expecting a baby boy, the little one who will complete their family of four.

A Planner Through and Through

Momma is a good friend of mine, and she’s a teacher and a planner through and through. Two months before the shoot, she was already pulling together outfits and accessories. I had to laugh and smile to myself. She’s the best..

When I asked if she’d have room to bring all of the goodies, she said, “Honey, I drive a minivan.” We both still laugh about that one.

The Best Big Sister in the Making

If a little girl could be born for a role, it’s this big sister to be. She’s already such a help to her momma and daddy, and you can see how much she loves this baby before he’s even here. Watching her lean in close to her momma’s belly was one of my favorite moments of the evening. He’s going to be one lucky little brother.

When Golden Hour Turns Blue

Momma had her heart set on a golden hour session. Then a hurricane pushed inland and had other plans for us.

We met in Sullivan Gardens in Kingsport, and I picked a quiet landscape on purpose. I didn’t want a busy backdrop. I wanted a calm space where this family could forget about the camera and focus on one another.

The rain did part, but instead of that warm golden glow, we were given a blue hour. Standing there in the cool, quiet light of that fall evening, it felt like it was meant to be. What better light to welcome a baby boy into the world?

So we leaned all the way in. Soft blues, a calm sky, and a family wrapped up in each other. It was perfect in every way.

“I Trust You to Work Your Magic”

I asked Momma if I could play a little with props and added accessories, and she was completely on board. Then she said, “I trust you to work your magic.”

We took our time. I captured portraits of Momma on her own, Momma and Daddy together, and big sister by herself, with plenty of family shots in between. We layered in sentimental pieces too: ultrasound photos, tiny baby boots, name puzzles, and more. Each little detail tells part of their story.

Real Moments Over Stiff Poses

I love photos that capture real moments and the connection people share with one another. Stiff poses can leave people feeling uncomfortable, and that shows up in the pictures. I’d much rather give you room to just be together: a hand on the belly, a giggle between daddy and daughter, a quiet glance between two people who prayed for this.

That’s where the good stuff lives.

When I edit, I let natural colors lead the way. I want your photos to feel timeless, not tied to a trend, so you’ll love them just as much years from now and want to pass them down to the generations that follow. Even with a blue hour palette, these images stay true to who this family is.

This family is resilient, and they’re a blessing to so many people who cross their path. I’m so honored anytime someone trusts me to capture a special moment in time for them, and that’s especially true with this one. I can’t wait to meet their sweet boy.
