What It Costs to Book a Family Photography Session (And Why)

One of the most common questions I get is simply, "How much does a session cost?" It's a fair question, and I think you deserve an honest answer, not just a number.

What Actually Goes Into the Price

When I set pricing for a live session, up to an hour in length, I factored in everything that actually happens around that hour, not just the hour itself.

There's the preparation beforehand and the communication with each client to understand exactly what they're hoping for. There's showing up on the day of the session and directing a group, whether that's one person or ten, in a way that feels natural and enjoyable for everyone in front of the camera. Then there's everything that happens after the session ends: culling through every image, editing each one to have that natural, timeless look I care so much about, and packaging up a final gallery for delivery.

On top of all of that, there's the equipment itself. I've invested in quality gear because it's what lets me deliver the images I want for my clients and for myself, and that includes ongoing maintenance and the platforms I use to actually serve and deliver to clients. All of it factors into the price.

Fair, Not Just Affordable

I did a good bit of research when setting my pricing, because I wanted it to be fair. Fair to my clients, and also fair to the time and passion I put into this work.

Hux and Mae isn't my full time job. My full time job is in marketing and advertising, and outside of that, I'm a wife and a mother to two toddlers. Photography is something I do selectively, when time allows, for families and individuals who want their story told well. Because of that, pricing isn't just about covering costs. It's about making sure this stays worth the time I'm choosing to give it, time I genuinely love giving.

Why It's Worth the Investment

Photography is an investment, and I say that as someone who invested in learning this craft myself before I ever offered it to others. But it's an investment that keeps giving. Not just to the person who books the session, but to everyone they share those images with, and to generations after that.

Think about what you treasure most from the people who came before you. More often than not, it's the photographs. They tell us where we came from and what our lives actually looked like. That's what I'm trying to help every client capture: something meaningful, beautiful, and lasting, not just a transaction.

If you want to see actual package details and pricing, you can find that on our Packages page. This post is really about the why behind the number, so that when you do look at pricing, you understand exactly what it represents.
