The Best Time of Day to Photograph Little Ones
If you've ever tried to get a toddler to cooperate for anything on someone else's schedule, you already know timing is everything. It's no different for a photo session.
Work Around Their Schedule, Not Against It
With little kids, I always recommend photographing mid-morning or shortly after an afternoon nap. What I avoid, without exception, is scheduling around nap time, meal time, or bedtime. Most kids are creatures of habit, and fighting their schedule is a losing battle for everyone involved.
I know this firsthand. I have two toddlers of my own, and if there's one thing motherhood has taught me, it's this: don't fight it, just go with it. When your kids are happy, everyone else is too, including you, and it shows in the photos.
For Older Kids and Adults
The same basic rule applies, just with less nap-time math. I still recommend avoiding meal times if you can help it. Come fed, bring water, and let's just have fun together. A hungry family is rarely a relaxed one, and relaxed is exactly what makes for the best photos.
Why It's Worth Planning Around
At the end of the day, the best light in the world can't fix a session where everyone's exhausted or hangry. Working with your family's natural rhythm, instead of against it, is what actually leads to the kind of real, easy moments I love capturing most. That's the whole idea behind Hux and Mae: work with real life, not against it, and let the photos reflect exactly that.
